The de Vere family ancient motto from time of its origin in Normandy being “Nothing is truer than the truth.” A play on “ver” in veracity’s, truth’s, Latin root.

Susan de Vere, youngest daughter of the perennially bankrupt 17th Earl of Oxford, as a teenage lady in waiting to Queen Elizabeth performed in simple skits, masques, at Court gatherings. As part of a 1602 show each player was given some gift from the Queen accompanied by a personal couplet. But wittily the Court poet John Davies who wrote the masque presented nothing to Susan. Everybody at Court knew Susan age 16 could offer no dowry from her famously improvident father in the financially competitive aristocratic marriage market. This thus is the Court poet’s couplet read to her before assembled nobles:

Nothing’s your lot. That’s more than can be told.

For Nothing is more precious than gold.
